TASK
After planning our digital matte in the pre production which you can see here: https://chikadesigning.blogspot.com/2026/07/digital-matte-painting-invisible-set.html
I continued with my task to photobash/photomanipulate the compositions I chose.
Photobashing 1 (Floating Mountains)
Reference:
While looking through photos for reference, I found this artwork and decided to use it for reference. Meaning I want the color palette and overall vibe to feel like this artwork. I have a reference for each of my photobash for me to visualize how it's going to look.
Assets Used:
When trying to find assets, I have to be quiet strategic with what I use. Since this is a very specific asset (floating mountains), it took me a really long time to find the exact ones that are suitable with the avatar world. For the ones in front and visible, I chose the mountains that looks exactly like in the movie, and for the not so realistic ones, I put it in the back, where it will only be shown their silhouette.
Progression
This was my first time photo manipulating, so I was figuring out a lot of stuff. I placed all the assets on the placement that I want first, and I color correct each one to match its surrounding using the Hue/saturation bar. Then, I add lighting (shadows and fog) using a soft brush. Finally, I add ambience by adding a gradient on top, and setting the layer to overlay.
Results
This is the final results after some trial and error. The results are okay, but for me it's way harder to photo manipulate during the day since it requires more light and value, which is something I haven't master yet.
Photobashing 2 (Pandora Forest)
Reference:
For this photobashing, I want to try making a night version. I saw this artwork on Pinterest and I think it captures the pandora vibe really well.
Assets Used:
Progression
This is my progression. I laid out all my assets, making sure they are in the correct perspective. Then, I made all of them really dark using Hue/Saturation because it's at night, and add lighting to it one by one. I added fog and adjusted the opacity to the objects far away, and added shadows and a light source on the branch. Finally, what seals it the most is the blue ambience that I added on top.
Results
And this is the final results of my second photo bashing. For my second try, I would say I'm very satisfied on how it turns out. I think it perfectly captures the avatar world which I am very happy about.
Photobashing 3 (Stone Arches)
Reference
For this final photobash, I want to try and redeem myself by doing a day version to practice, and basing it off of this reference:

Failed Attempt
This is my first attempt on the final photobash, I followed the composition too much and did not think about realism. The water looks like it's on the same level as the cave, and it just does not look realistic at all.
For my second attempt, I think more on the realism, and made the cliff look like its above sea level by giving it more levels, while still staying true to my composition by adding the vines. Since I found the asset already from my first composition, I re use them and adjusted the lighting. I also added clouds and fogs.
Results
And this is the final results of the final photo bashing. Initially, I wanted to put an ambience of blue over it, but when I tried, it became an overkill, and I thought it looked more natural this way. Satisfied with this one too yay.
