Moodboard
I came up with a simple concept about a guy in the 1900's that partly turned his house into a puppet show to earn money. I came up with this concept because it was easy to understand, I like the carnival/puppet show theme, and a cabin house is pretty beginner friendly. When concepting, I did not want to over estimate myself and to know my current abilities in 3D, so it will be more efficient.
Concept & Sketches
After gathering references and moodboard, I started to explore the house's silhouette. I started with a simple cabin shape and further explored more in terms of silhouette readability. I wanted the house front area to be very decorated to attract audience and the back area to be shabby. I think it adds well to it's story telling that he is trying to survive. After receiving feedback and consideration, I think the house that fits the best is number 5. because it shows that the whole front house is overshadowing the shabby area.
For the environment, I sketched a simple fenced area around the house. At first, I made the fence around the whole house, but I feel that it would add more to the storytelling to restrict the area only in the front part of the house. For the seating area, its a mix of boxes, and wooden chairs. I didn't want to make it fancy because it wouldn't make sense since he's poor. Just a guy trying to decorate the place as best as he can with what he can afford.
I further develop the concept by deciding what the decoration would look like. What the show is performing, the patterns used, how it functions, etc. I made a window like mechanism in the puppet show opening, so when the show is over, the performer can just close it, and it will turn into a normal house.
However, I didn't want it to be just a window. I made it functional to the puppet show and blend it more by adding a donation box, posters, paintings, etc.
I came up with a concept for the puppet show, It tells the adventure of a girl and her dog (the art I drew is me as a child and my current dog hehe), and every performance it would be a different adventure. I made the logo based on my art. I also amde a ticket box to be placed outside of the house for people to pay. Finally, I also added a wooden pole with a banner that says the scheadule of the current performance, which can be changed with a sliding sign.
For the back house, I sketched some props where his personal belongings would be. I made a simple outhouse for him to do his business, a laundry stand, and a cloth hanger. I made sure to stick with the 1900's concept and made all assets relevant to that era.
After receiving feedback, I was suggested to create a simple blockout in blender to help me with the perspective and camera angles. Then, I took a screenshot of each angle I wanted. I think this helped me a lot because Im still relatively new to perspective.
I first made the line art by tracing over my blender blockouts, and adding values. I keep in mind on making the hero asset to be more darker/brighter from the environment so it becomes the focal point. I use the brush "Palete Knife" from photoshop to add values because the ink shows up depending on your pen pressure, which makes it quicker for me to color.

FEEDBACK
Week 3: No Feedback
Week 4: Continue composition , but this area here is too empty
Week 5: You should watch tv show carnival to get some inspiration. What I mean by the area is to empty is its too far, you dont want to embarrass yourself by showing these empty space, make it closer.
Week 6: Add more story telling, add more ppl, make the camera jauhan , how is the sign attached to the house. make it more functional, add indoor lighting for the top, add like cup or personal stuff in the bench or something.
Maybe add toilet place, explore trees, vegetation and terrains. Don't draw the grass straight, have momentum and ryhtmamic. Draw ppl who lives there.
Extend the roof maybe so it doesn't get to the heat, extend/explore more, dont be too attached. this is already can. exaggerate certain components, play with the scale, good art. at the moment the back area its nothing special, so extend/explore more. can use this idea. (talking about the shutter concept n all)
Week 7: Holiday
Week 8: no feedback
REFLECTION
Throughout this assignment, I had a lot of ups and downs and difficulty. I tried my best to make it logical, and to put myself in the character's shoes, and implement it in my design. What I didn't expect to learn from this is I had to learn basic architecture, researching on how houses are built. What i struggle the most doing is making the roof connect in a way where it would be logical. I don't know why it was the hardest for me, but after researching, I ended up with an answer. I'm quite satisfied with the results, but there are some mistakes I couldn't perfect because of time constraints and poor time management, along with my other modules. However, I think I did well in terms of how everything functions, because I use to just concept with no logic and meaning, but as time goes by I learn to concept with functionality and purpose. Hopefully it shows in my work. I was rushed too with the coloring process since I found out last minute it had to be colored... which was my fault I might missed in in class when it was mentioned. Overall, I think I did okay, and I learned lots of new stuff like the 1900's era , how to make compositions, and basic architecture.
