Task 02-Concept Development

1. Pose Sketches Exploration

After the first task, I moved on to task two. One of the requirements was to explore some pose sketches. When making the poses, I made sure to match the poses to the character's lore, such as making her dig because she likes to scavenger around in the candy land,  being sneaky and cautious, or her finding something precious when digging. I  made some casual poses that match her personality like winking, and holding her prop.

I also fixed her body proportions and facial structure to look more like a sugar rush character as I noticed from my character turn around that her head is too big, and wide.

2. Facial Expression Sketches Exploration

Then, I sketched out some facial expressions. I tried staying true to the facial features while drawing, and drew how she would look like happy, sad, angry, excited, etc. Mr. Fitri told us we can include the neutral face, so I included that too.

3. Weapon Sketches

I made three sketches for my weapon (a tool to help her to scavenger). They all have the same theme: all constructed with lemon and candy, to indicate my character digging around, finding things she likes, and making it into a tool that is useful to her. When asking feedback from Mr.Fitri, he told me the first two is too big, and that it needs to be designed for her small hands. So I went with the third design, which was a lemon being bitten as the main part of the scoop.

4. Weapon Turnaround
Tool is made out of:
  • Whole lemon bitten to create a hole for scooping
  • chocolate bar attached with candy melts
  • Decorations such as  lemon sour belt, lemon laffy taffy, etc.

5. Alternative Color Palette
For the color palette, I explored six different colors with the color yellow as the main premise. Exploring color palettes for this character was a bit challenging because I had to mess with the hue, saturation, and contrast.

I tried making different types of yellow. Green dominant, warm yellow, light yellow almost to white, etc. I changed the colors of the individual clothing and hair to see which I like best.

6. Revised Pose
I chose three poses that I think has potential and replaced it with clean line weights. The first pose is Lulu holding her prop on her hand, second is her squatting down with a sulking face, and the third is her laying down while winking, showing her playful personality.

7. Pose Colored
I ended up choosing the last pose to be colored and finalized, as it looks the most accurate to the sugar rush character, and it reflects her personality. When coloring, I chose the lighter yellow color and added white glitter to her skirt and hat, as I noticed the other sugar rush characters have this sparkly and shiny look on their characters. I also added other necessary things such as shading and overlay.

ALTERNATIVE

1. References/Moodboard
For her alternative self, I figured it would be fun if I did an alternative version of her being in a cybergoth outfit since it's the complete opposite of her outfit. Before this, I had no idea about cybergoth, so I had to collect references and see what it usually contains. After collecting references, I noticed they all mostly have:

  • Big colored volumed hair with decorations
  • Furry thick leg warmers
  • Masks (gas masks)
  • Layered clothes
  • Accessories such as: big goggles, belts, choker, necklaces, etc
  • Color palette is limited (a color and black).
After consulting with Mr.Fitri, he accepted my proposal and told me to proceed.

2. Alternative Outfits
I made three outfits, with different hairstyles, accessories, and clothing:

  • For the first outfit, which was my first attempt, I gave her a thick leg warmer, volumed hair, heavy eye makeup, piercings on nose and eyebrows, and a choker with other accessories such as glasses on her bean hat, laced top, and layered skirt with belts.
  • For the second outfit, I tried to be more extra. High pony tail, micro bangs, gas mask, tattoos/symbols on her forehead and eyebrows. For the outfit, I went with a stripes hole on the hand gloves , stockings, and tube top. She uses a high thick boots, and layered belt skirt with extra strings for accessories. I also added a star tattoo near her armpit, and she uses white contacts.
  • For the final outfit, I made a shorter version of her pony tail with more jaggered, spiky hair. Spikey glasses, different gas mask design, a triangular micro bangs, small pupil contacts, and tattoos on her forehead. I also made her eyebrows thinner and more upturned. For her outfit, she has furry leg warmers on her hand and legs, net hand gloves, and a layered skirt and skirt.

3. Turnaround
After sending it to Mr.Fitri, he told me to go with the outfit variation 2. For the back view, I added a back tattoo and a star symbol in her shirt to match with her tattoo.

4. Color Palette
Since cybergoth only uses two colors (main color and black), I tried different variations of colors with the color black such as red, pink, blue, green, etc. I also tried to experiment with its saturation and hue.

5. Breakdown
In the breakdown, I included all of her accessories, props, and tattoos.

6. Colored Turn Around
I ended up going with the color red and black, as it's a very contrasting color and fits her character well. I made her face way whiter than her body as most cybergoths use a base makeup that is way brighter than their actual color.

REFLECTION

This task was the most time consuming so far since we had to create an alternative outfit for our character, which adds more work in a short time. However, I've enjoyed the process in making the alternative outfit as I get to discover and research on a new style that I've never seen before and I get to see what my character looks like in an alternative world which was fun. Where I had the most difficulty is when I did the poses exploration for Lulu, I find it really hard to create different poses with her body proportions, especially how the bigger legs bend. I also find it hard to stay consistent with the look and proportions of the character when posing, so I will improve on myself in the future in these areas. Overall, I find the alternative world task the most fun, and hopefully in the future I can further improve on my posing sketches.
