TASK

1.  Concept and Development

Moodboard

My concept idea is to make a hybrid creature, and thought of the two most random things after thinking, a snail and wendigo. I figured they would look interesting together as Wendigo has an anatomy like a human, which was perfect for this module, and a snail gives it a unique look. After brainstorming some ideas, I came up with a simple story.

Varn is a failed curse gone wrong - a fusion of a snail and a wendigo. Long ago, a tribe suffering from a wendigo's curse tried to end it through a sealing ritual, hoping to move the curse into something small and harmless — a forest snail. But the ritual went wrong. Instead of trapping the curse, it fused the wendigo's spirit with the snail, creating a single being. Confused, in pain, and newly self-aware, the creature fled into the forest. The damp environment helped stabilize its unstable body, and over time, it became his home.

He carries the slow, patient calmness of a snail, twisted by the endless hunger of a wendigo. Moving carefully and almost peacefully, he takes his time to stalk his prey instead of rushing. Quiet and reclusive, he hates being seen - but beneath that calm exterior lies a hunger that never fades. He doesn't chase, he waits, watching from the shadows and striking with his claw at the perfect moment.

Now, he lives deep within the woods, avoiding humans. But when someone trespasses into his territory, his wendigo instincts awaken, driving him to attack before retreating again into the quiet, misty forest he calls home.

2.  Exploration and Sketches

Silhouettes

When creating silhouettes, I try to explore many possibilities with the character's figure. I made a really lanky and skinny one, a big buff one, a small and short one, and even the ones without a shell, just to see what it looks like. I ended up choosing the one in the middle on the second row as it is the one that looks most like a wendigo and a snail.

Outfit Variations
After choosing my silhouette, I created three outfit variations. When making the outfits, I made sure to make it look like it was DIY'd by Varn himself, with layers of cloth, ripped up pieces, and one made out of fish nets. I also added a leg support made out of cloth and rope for him to carry his heavy shell on his back. I decided to choose the third one, as it is the most feasible and suitable for his lore,

FEEDBACK

REFLECTION

I had fun when concepting my character Varn. At first, I wanted to design a stylized chicken character, but I decided to discard it since it had a lot of props. I had a difficult time when creating the backstory because it just seemed a bit random for my character to have that kind of mix. Through this assignment, I got to learn coloring in photoshop for the first time. Before this, I've never colored in Photoshop before. I find it quite fun because the software has a lot of features that supports digital coloring. Overall, I think this exercise was a good start in this module.
