What Have I Learnt in This Module?
Throughout this module, I’ve learned a lot about the rules when making designs, compositions, perspective, time management, etc. Before, I didn’t really think much about the reasoning on how can a design be good/eye catching, but now I understand that there are layers on making an artwork.
One of the biggest things I improved on was using a digital software/ At first, I found it difficult because I've never drawn digitally or used Procreate before, but after practicing, finding tutorials on youtube, and getting feedback, I got better at it. I also learned that there are a lot of help you can find on the internet that can give you new knowledge and ability to improve your artwork.
What Did I Enjoy the Most?
One of the things I enjoyed the most in this module was the first task, which was researching and observing artworks that has design principles in it. I liked it because it made me realize how much design principles are included in every artwork, and the reasoning behind it. Finding pictures that included the principles was a fun activity that made me more observant and made it easier to understand.
For example, when we worked on Task 1, I had the chance to scroll through Pinterest and look for artworks. I realized that when I was searching an artwork that has 'Emphasis' on it, It also has contrast, closure, hierarchy, etc. It was exciting because I got to learn something new that I could take for the rest of my life and improve my art with it. Also, seeing everyone else’s work and how they observe different artworks differently was really interesting.
Another thing I enjoyed was the feedback that I received from my lecturer, Ms. Jinchi. Her feedbacks were really helpful, and It made the learning process more engaging and helped me see things from different perspectives.
What Did I Not Enjoy the Most?
The part I found the most challenging was finding ideas on how to improve my chosen artwork. At first, I chose a random artwork without reading the Task 3 brief and how we need to improve and develop it (which was my mistake). Fortunately, my friend informed me and I get to choose an artwork where I have ideas on how to improve it.
When we had to come up with three sketches , I found it hard to convey my ideas onto a paper and black and white pencil, where my vision was to use colors and textures. Even though I didn’t enjoy it as much as other tasks, I know it was still useful because it taught me to be more creative by applying the knowledge I learned from the previous Task.
What Have I Learnt About Myself Through This Module?
This module helped me realize that I take quite a long time when coming up with ideas. I did a lot of brainstorming, and scrapped a lot of ideas. I also realized that I like the color and red together , that is probably why the chosen artwork that I chose just catches my eye, and why I decided to not change the color palette. Additionally, I also noticed that I tend to overthink details, which is something I need to work on.
At the same time, I also found out that I really enjoy drawing digitally. Usually I would always go traditional with paper and pencil, but through this module I get to experiment on a different software that made me more confident in my abilities, and I am excited to explore more in the future.
What Has Changed and What Has Not in My Learning Journey?
Things that has changed since starting this module are improving on my digital art skills, understanding design principles, using new tools, and my communication skills. Before, I used to hesitate when asking for feedback as I did not know how to communicate my struggles/questions, but because of the consultations that are a must to join, I brave myself to ask questions to improve my art.
However, one thing that hasn’t really changed is my speed in finding ideas. I still find myself overcomplicating things and thinking the ideas are not good enough. I will take time for me to work on this issue but I know I can improve.
What Are My Aspirations?
Moving forward, I want to improve my skills in digital painting, and to think outside of the box more. I also hope to experiment with new styles and learn theories about art.
I feel like this module has given me a solid foundation, but I know there’s still a lot to learn. I want to keep pushing myself to try new things and step out of my comfort zone so that I can grow as a designer. Eventually, I’d love to get better at expressing emotions through design.
