LECTURE

Week 9

Mr. Fauzi mentioned that this project will be a collaboration between Digital Photography & Imaging and Illustration & Visual Narrative, but our photography work will be the main focus of his evaluation. He also encouraged us to use Pinterest as a resource for poster inspiration and to select a quote of our choice for the design.

We also explored the distinctions between realismsurrealism, and dadaism. Surrealism is an artistic and cultural movement that enables artists to convey their subconscious thoughts through representations of illogical or dream-like imagery and concepts.

PRACTICAL

Research & Ideation

I really enjoyed the collage exercise we did on Week 4, so I decided to make my poster into a collage to use this as practice. I looked through Pinterest for a brief idea.

After looking through pinterest and getting some inspiration, I began to digitalize my work in Adobe Photoshop.

Digitalization

First, I used the polygonal tool and select and mask on my picture. To clean up the hair, I used the refine edge tool to make sure I get every hair. Then I place it on a black background.

I added a texturizer from the filter gallery so it wouldn't look so plain.

Then I added a bunch of newspaper elements that I cut out myself using the lasso tool. I wanted the newspaper to look diverse, So instead of just black and white newspapers, I changed the color into a more yellow-beige tone using the Hue and Saturation in adjustments section.

To add color, I used the grunge texture element that Mr. Fauzi gave on our Digital Collage assignment to create outline behind the subject using the polygonal lasso tool.

For the final details, I added another element to replace my face that I took a picture of back when I went to Gentle Monster in TRX.  I lowered down the saturation so it would blend in better with the background.

Since blue and orange is a complementary color, I duplicated another of the grunge element and changed the color to blue in the Hue and Saturation section.

Finally, I wrapped my body around using the newspaper element but lowering down the brightness and saturation so it will blend in with my body, yet still visible.

Figure 1.4 Final Poster

In this piece, I tried to capture the idea that “art has no rules, only endless possibilities.” I used different materials like newspaper clippings and rough textures to make something weird and interesting. The big eye in the middle covering my face kind of symbolizes seeing things in a new way, breaking away from what’s normal. By layering all these different patterns and shapes, I wanted to show that art doesn’t have to stick to any one style or rule, it can be messy, experimental, and totally unique. It looks a bit chaotic, but that’s what makes it feel alive and free, just like the endless possibilities in art.

REFLECTION

Making this poster in Photoshop was a fun learning experience. I used the polygonal lasso tool and select and mask to messily cut out and arrange each piece, which helped me layer the newspapers in a way that felt organized but still a bit messy. Changing the hue and saturation let me play around with the colors to get the look I wanted, giving it kind of a surreal vibe. I also used the texturizer effect to add some texture, which made the whole thing feel more real and added depth. What I found challenging was starting. I did not know what colors to use, what goes well together, what elements to use, etc.  However, when I start the ideas start flowing to what lead me to the final artwork. I learned that you need to start first in order to solve things.  Overall, I learned a lot about combining different tools and effects to make something that feels creative and unique.
