LECTURES
Week 1: Briefing
On week 1, we were given a google slides to introduce us to the subject IVN. It includes the assessments, guide, senior examples , and a brief to the tasks. We were also given a few resources to help us get started with using adobe illustrator.
Week 2: Bèzier Game
On week 2, Mr. Hafiz had us play an online game called "Bèzier" to familiarize ourselves with the pen tool.
Week 3: Pathfinder, Shape builder, Character Shapes
On week 3, Mr Hafiz gave us a tutorial in class on how to recreate using the pathfinder. I discovered that there are several shape modes of pathfinder such as unite, minus front, intersect, exclude, divide, trim, merge, crop, outline, and minus back. In this case, we used intersect to create the adidas shape and used shape builder to remove the rectangle part of the adidas.
Squares: Gives off an impression for strong and sturdy characters.
Circles: Makes a character looks bubbly, friendly, and cute.
Triangle: Gives off a sense of danger, or fast and insect characters.
INSTRUCTIONS
Task 1: Vormator Challenge
REFERENCES/MOODOARD
INITIAL SKETCHES
I came up with five designs based on my reference pictures. I experimented with different body shapes, size, height, outfit, and personality to give my character.
1. For the first design, It's a grumpy fat grandpa with glasses and a neat outfit. For his mushroom head, i did not give it a swirl but a rounded shape instead to match his round body.
2. For the second design, the creature is shaped more like a gremlin with short legs with no weapon or magical broom to defend anyone or anything. With long ears and sharp eyes, this character is a combination of creepy and powerless.
3. For the third design, i tried going off character and make it more human-like. With three eyes, three glasses, and a long beard, it became off topic with the character mushroom.
4. For the fourth design, i decided to approach the more adorable side, making it shaped like a potato, with short hands and legs and paws beneath the legs. Thick eyebrows, toenails, wand, and a grumpy expression.
5. For the final design, i made the character a guardian to protect the forest. This explains why he has a long body and legs, elf ears, small angry eyes, an angry pose, and a magical broom to protect the forest
from people.
FINAL SKETCH
I wanted to make the character cute but at the same time still has some grumpy attitude, so this fourth sketch is the most applicable to the description.
DIGITALIZING
First, i imported my sketch into adobe illustrator and find the right shapes to cover the body of the character.
Third, i added simple shading without any details.
Finally, for the rest of the shading, i used pathfinder and shape builder that i learned from class.
In class, Mr. Hafiz told us that for a character to look cute, their eyes need to be wide apart and big. So, i applied it in my character.
Using the shape builder , i created a shape that will be used for my shading in the wooden staff and mushroom shown in the picture below.
I also used the gradient tool to create a glow effect in the wooden staff's gemstone.
FINAL OUTCOME:
BACKGROUND STORY
Twiggle (the word twig and giggle combined) is a creature that hides and lives in the forest. He isn't a guardian, protector, or defender. He is just of one those mythical beings that humans occasionally spot among the trees. When people see him, they often record videos and share them on social media, making others wondering if he is even real. Twiggle is scared of humans, and when he comes across one, he typically hides among the tree branches, taking advantage of his small, chubby body. With his mushroom hat, Twiggle can camouflage himself as just another mushroom, shrinking down to avoid detection.
However, if he feels threatened, Twiggle will use his wooden staff for protection. The staff has multiple purposes. Its glowing light acts as a flashlight in the dark, guiding him through the shadowy woods, and it helped him walk more steadily due to his short, chubby legs, and his crossed eyed eyes. Though Twiggle may defend himself if neccessary, he is not a threat. He is just another mysterious creature of the forest that humans have yet to discover.
RATIONALE
Through this project, i learned to use the pathfinder, shape builder, and gradient tools in Adobe Illustrator. These tools expanded my design skills and allowed me to explore new methods of creating characters. I applied the pathfinder and shape builder tool to create shading, which brought more depth in my flat colors. This process helped me brainstorm on how to create a character with limited shapes without distortion.
I also learned how the shapes used in character design can affect their personality or looks. For example, circular shapes often give a bubbly and approachable demeanor, while triangular shapes can make them seem more dynamic or intimidating. Square shapes on the other hand shows strength or stability. This insight allowed me to be more careful when designing a character, making sure i select the right shapes for my character's personality.
Reflecting on the project, i found it to be both a fun and challenging exercise. It was a refreshing break from my usual assignments. I get to freely create my own character and let my mind wander freely, allowing me to be more creative while learning new skills. This challenge pushed me to think outside of the box and embrace the limitations as a source of inspiration. I'm excited to continue exploring Adobe Illustrator 's many tools in the future.
